How to remove your vehicle from storage in Quebec

With spring in the air, you’re reminded that it’s almost time to take your vintage car or shiny convertible out for a spin.

But before you can do that, here are a few tips and tricks to help you properly take your vehicle out of storage and back on the road again.

If your vehicle has been in storage for a year or more

Before taking your vehicle out of storage, you should have it inspected if it’s been in storage for a year or more. Your vehicle should be inspected at a recognized Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) repair shop.

You’ll have to book an appointment and cover the mechanical inspection fees.

If your vehicle is compliant, you’ll be given a valid mechanical inspection certificate attesting it’s safe for road use. Keep it handy because you’ll need to submit it to the SAAQ to take it out of storage.

And off we go! Time to reinstate your insurance!

Before you take your vehicle for a drive, you should reinstate your car insurance coverage that was suspended during storage.

You may also be entitled to a storage credit. You will be credited for this amount.

Submitting your request to the SAAQ

You’re almost there!

The day you want to drive your car, you’ll have to submit a request to the SAAQ to have it licensed for road use again. Unfortunately, you can’t do it before.

This process is done online  (This hyperlink will open in a new tab). or at one of the service outlets  (This hyperlink will open in a new tab)..

Bring the following documents:

  • Your driver’s licence or a photo ID
  • Your vehicle's licence plate number
  • Mechanical inspection certificate, if applicable.

How much does it cost?

You’ll have to pay for your registration for the remainder of the period, up to the regular renewal period, including the current month.

One last thing: your playlist

Now that your favourite car is back on the road, all you need to do is prep and listen to your playlist.
